Located in the Print Studio in the basement behind the newly converted Yale School of Art on Chapel Street, the Graphic Design press is a tiny but immaculate letterpress shop equipped with a Vandercook, four banks of type and a lovely collection of ornaments. Since letterpress printing is no longer taught in the Graphic Design Program, the shop serves as way for students and faculty at the Art School to familiarize themselves with letterpress technique, and make use of the equipment for their personal projects. The Graphic Design press is run by Andrew Sloat, under the guidance of John Gambell, Yale University Printer and Critic in the Graphic Design Program. UpdateThis fall, we will be replacing the antique imposing stone there, fine-tuning the Vandercook and adding a collection of wood type for use in various artworks. One of things we hope to accomplish is a closer connection between Art School students and undergraduates, with the former coming to work in the college presses on larger projects, and helping to advise the latter on design issues. |
